Accessibility Statement of Lauda Repository of the University of Lapland

This accessibility statement applies to the Lauda Repository of the University of Lapland. This statement was written on 1 September 2020. Its English translation was published on 13 November 2020. The statement was last updated on 28 May 2025.

Lauda is the institutional repository of the University of Lapland. Lauda includes books, articles and theses created at the University of Lapland. Lauda also contains some scientific periodicals published in the Barents region.

Accessibility Assessment of the Digital Service

The accessibility of the publications stored in the repository is the responsibility of the University of Lapland. The University has also conducted the accessibility assessment.

The National Library of Finland is responsible for the accessibility of the user interface. The accessibility of the user interface has been evaluated by the National Library of Finland.

Non-accessible content

The repository also contains content that is not within the scope of the applicable legislation.

• Accessibility legislation does not apply to content stored in the repository prior to 23 September 2018. The content is not updated, nor is it needed for handling unfinished matters with the authorities.
• The repository contains self-archived publications that have initially been published elsewhere. These publications are not produced, funded, or supervised by the University of Lapland, and therefore accessibility legislation does not apply to them.

Accessibility Status of the Service

This website is compliant with critical accessibility requirements. The website is not yet fully compliant with all the requirements.

The deficiencies are grouped according to whether they are related to the website publications or the user interface. The problems found were also grouped in accordance with the principles of accessibility and it is explained in their connection what success WCAG criterion is not met in this case. Accessibility of the Publications

The shortcomings with the accessibility of files are specified below.

At the moment University of Lapland has no university-wide guidelines for publication accessibility. The accessibility of the publications may differ and files might have shortcomings.

Recurring shortcomings in publications:

Tables in the abstract pages are missing programmatic column headings and their reading order is incorrect.

Other often recurring shortcomings:

• PDF documents may include visual elements and diagrams that are missing text alternatives. (WCAG 1.1.1)
• PDF documents may have layout issues that hamper screen reader use, such as unnecessary line breaks and headings with no heading levels. (WCAG 1.3.1)
• The table structures in PDF documents may have deficiencies that hamper screen reader use. Table structures have been used text layout purposes, there are no programmatic column headers, or similar data has been divided into several tables. (WCAG 1.3.1)
• There are no links to the footnotes in the text of some PDF documents, which makes it difficult to interpret them when using a screen reader. (WCAG 1.3.1)
• There may be shortcomings in file metadata, such as missing titles or incorrect language specifications and author information.

Accessibility of e-books

The repository also contains material that can be interpreted as e-books. The amendment of the accessibility legislation on 28 June 2025 requires that information on the accessibility of e-books is available. Accessibility information has been added to the metadata of e-book material.

The following deficiencies have been found in assessing the accessibility of the User Interface:

Deficiencies in the accessibility of forms and images

Some of the images lack text alternatives. Some fields on the input form are missing labels (label elements). The input form is visible only to signed-in users.

On some pages, the levels of the headings are not logical.

The contrast ratio between text and its background is not always sufficient

On the input form, the color red is used as a means of attracting attention, and the contrast ratio of the buttons on the form is not sufficient. The input form is visible only to signed-in users.

When assistive technologies are used, repeated blocks of content cannot be skipped

The pages do not provide a Skip to main content link or an alternative logical heading structure. The primary content of the page is therefore not easily accessible when assistive technologies are used.
