Tiivistelmä
Tutkimukseni tehtävänä on selvittää naisten parisuhdeväkivaltakokemuksia, hei¬dän väkivallasta selviytymisen prosessiaan ja selviytymättömyyden kokemuk¬siaan sekä ammatillisen tuen tarvetta ja avun kohtaamista. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 20:sta Ensi- ja turvakotien liiton turvakotien asiakkaina olleiden naisten elämäkerrallisesta haastattelusta. Tutkimuksen teoreettis-metodinen lähestymis¬tapa on narratiivinen.
Vasta irtautuminen väkivaltaisesta suhteesta mahdollistaa naisen oman selviytymisprosessin.
The objective of my study is to gain a detailed insight into the experiences of domestic violence victims, to analyse their successful and unsuccessful coping efforts with violence and to look into the need for professional help and to investigate the extent and characteristics o( the ways these needs are catered for. My research data consist of twenty biographical interviews of women who were clients in one of the shelters maintained by the Finnish Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters (Ensi- ja turvakotien liitto). The theoretical¬methodological approach of my study is narrative.
I look into the coping processes of women in violent relationships and the form of coping that is only possible after the break up of the relationship. Despite the presence of violence in their relationships, the thoughts and actions of women are dominated by coping in the relationship and the continuation of family life. W omen make use of several emotional and problem-oriented means to cope in their violent relationships. Their behaviour is based not only on their emotions, affection and positive experiences in their relationship but also internalised cultural and gender -related attitudes and expectations concerning women' s commitment to their relationship and family.
In general, women have to go through a number of painful experiences to
become convinced of the inevitability of change. The physical assaults women suffer can continue for a longer period of time and take worse forms, eventually women realise the vulnerable position of their children, they make attempts to seek help, and they may experience numerous shelter visits. It is only the break up of the violent relationship, however, that enables women to embark on a coping process of their own. It is a question of a major change in life and an imperative for rebuilding the self. W omen attach meaning to their coping processes in their own subjective ways, and the time their coping takes varies. The stories of the survivor, the seeker and the doubter are determined according to the fact how women themselves feel they have recovered and found their identities and how they are oriented towards the future.
W omen seek help from different social and healthcare services and shelters. The significance of the violence-specific help provided by the shelter is indisputable in the coping process. W omen have found the official service system wanting in its approach to their problems, as official responses range from seemingly helpful service to the denial of the problem, and to accusations and complete failure to cater for customers' needs, which poses a major challenge to the official services to improve and increase their abilities to recognise patterns of violence and to develop their professional and organisatorial practices to confront the phenomenon.
