Paikan henki: Tilasuunnitelma Arktiselle Keramiikkakeskukselle

Abstract

Pro gradu – tutkielmassa tarkastelen paikan henkeä ja sen seikkaperäisiä käsitteitä, joita

voidaan hyödyntää tilasuunnittelussa. Tutkielmani koostuu teoriataustasta ja

tilasuunnitteluosuudesta Arktiselle Keramiikkakeskukselle. Tutkielman teoriaosuus

jakautuu kahteen osaan, jotka käsittelevät paikan hengen ilmentymistä ja sen

tunnistettavuutta, sekä museoiden ja näyttelyiden historiaa ja sisältöä.

Käytän tutkielmassani kuvailevan tutkimuksen menetelmää. Primääriaineistona olivat

kokonaisvaltaisesti näyttelysuunnittelua käsittelevä alan kirjallisuus, paikan henkeä

käsittelevä kirjallisuus fenomenologian näkökulmasta, visuaalinen aineisto ja

taiteellisen työni tuotokset, sekä tekemäni muistio. Tutkielmassa tarkastelen

museotilasuunnitelmani vaiheita ja tekemiäni valintojani, joita peilaan paikan hengen

teoriaan.

Tutkielman tarkoitus on taiteellisen työni ja teorian avulla kuvata ja selvittää miten

paikan henkeä voi ilmentää museotilassa, niin että näyttelytilasta ilmenee paikan sijainti.

Tutkielman tuloksissa selvennän mitä paikan henki merkitsee ja miten se näyttäytyy

museotilassa.

In the Master’s thesis I examine the spirit of the place and its detailed concepts that can

be utilized in space planning. My thesis consists of theoretical background and space

planning for Arctic Ceramics Centre. The theoretical part of the thesis is divided into

two parts, which deal with the expression and identity of the place in general level, as

well as the history and the content of museums and exhibitions.

In my dissertation I use the methodology of descriptive research. The thesis`s primary

sources consists of professional literature of exhibition design, literature on the spirit

of the place from the point of the view of phenomenology, my visual material gathered

from the design destination, the results of my artistic work, and personal memo. In the

thesis I reflect the stages of the museum space design and the choices I have made to

the theory of the spirit of the place.

The aim of the thesis is to describe and discover how the spirit of the place can be

expressed in designing the museum space in the way that the implementations of a

location can be seen at the exhibition sight. In the conclusion I clarify the meaning of

the spirit of the place and how it is displayed in the museum space design.
