Future Reflections – taideperustainen toimintatutkimus nuorten kaksisuuntaisen kotoutumisen edistämisestä videotaidetyöpajassa

Abstract

Tässä tutkielmassa kehitetään nuorten kaksisuuntaista kotoutumista edistävää taidetoimintaa Future Reflections -videotaidetyöpajassa. Työpaja oli Taidevaihde – Nuorten kaksisuuntainen kotoutuminen 2016–2018 -hankkeen ensimmäinen toiminto keväällä 2016. Maahanmuutto ja kotoutuminen ovat erittäin ajankohtaisia yhteiskunnallisia haasteita, joihin taide ja kuvataidekasvatus voivat vastata omilla toimintamalleillaan. Kotoutuminen käsitetään tässä tutkielmassa kaksisuuntaisena toimintana, jossa sekä maahanmuuttajien että suomalaisväestön aktiivinen rooli on tärkeä. Tutkielmassa sanoitetaan erityisesti taidetoiminnassa syntyvän kohtaamisen tilan merkitystä kaksisuuntaisessa kotoutumisessa. Työpajatoimintaa kehitetään taideperustaisen toimintatutkimuksen strategian avulla. Kehitystyö tapahtuu toiminnassa prosessinomaisesti kriittisen havainnoinnin ja reflektoinnin kautta teoretisoiden. Tutkimustehtävänä on videotaidetyöpajan toteuttaminen. Tutkielman teoria muodostuu kaksisuuntaisen kotoutumisen, kulttuurisen moninaisuuden, yhteisöllisen taidekasvatuksen ja kohtaamisen tilan käsitteistä. Tutkielman aineistona on koko työpajaprojekti ja toimintaa tarkastellaan erityisesti työpajan ohjaajaryhmän reflektointikeskusteluiden kautta. Tutkielman tuloksena syntyy syvempi ymmärtämys prosessista sekä kehitysehdotuksia saman tyyppiseen toimintaan jatkossa. Työpaja toteutui neljän tapaamiskerran mittaisena paikallisella nuorisokeskuksella. Toimintaan tavoitettiin sekä maahanmuuttaja- että suomalaistaustaisia nuoria. Työpajassa tehtiin yhdessä videoteos, jota on myöhemmin esitetty julkisesti. Työpajaprojekti oli pilottiluontoinen ja siinä kohdattiin monia haasteita liittyen muun muassa osallistujien tavoittamiseen, yhteisen kielen puuttumiseen sekä tasapainon hakemiseen dialogisen prosessin ja produktin tuottamisen välillä. Kaksisuuntaisen kotoutumisen edistämisen kannalta keskeiset huomiot prosessissa liittyivät taidetoiminnan luonteeseen sekä ohjaajan ja osallistujan rooleihin. Näiden elementtien huomioiminen tarkoituksenmukaisella tavalla luo toiminnassa edellytyksiä kohtaamisen tilan syntymiselle. Yhteisöllisessä taidekasvatuksessa kaksisuuntainen kotoutuminen rakentuu yhteisen tekemisen kautta syntyvälle toiminnalliselle yhteisöllisyydelle, jonka pohjalta kokemusten jakamisen ja teoksellisuuden myötä muodostuu yhteisiä merkityksiä eli symbolista yhteisyyttä.

This research develops art-based methods to promote two-way integration among young people. The research is based on a video art workshop called Future Reflections which was organized in the spring of 2016. The workshop was the first act of The ArtGear – Two-Way Integration of Young People 2016–2018 project. Immigration and integration are important topics in the current debate of our society. Art and art education have their own possibilities to respond to these challenges. In this case, integration is understood as a twoway process in which the Finnish population share an equal active role with the immigrants. In this research, the meaning of the space of encounter in art as a promoter of the two-way integration is put into words. The research is based on the strategy of art-based action research. The developing of the workshop activity in question is a process consisting of critical observation and reflection whilst comparing it to theory. The assignment of this research was to carry out a video art workshop. The theory consists of the concepts of two-way integration, cultural diversity, community-based art education and the space of encounter. The research material is the workshop project and the action is analyzed particularly through the reflective discussions of the workshop leaders. The result of this research is a deeper understanding of the process that took place and development proposals for similar kind of action organized in the future. The workshop consisted of four meetings at a local youth center. There were youngsters with both immigrant and Finnish background taking part. There was a common video art piece produced which has been shown in public afterwards. The workshop was a pilot-like project and there were many challenges faced during the action. The challenges concerned for example reaching the participants, lack of shared language and the balancing between the dialogical process and producing the actual product. In terms of promoting two-way integration the key findings concerned the nature of the action that took place as well as the roles of the workshop leaders and the participants. By paying appropriate attention to these three elements, it is possible to create basis for the spaces of encounter to form during the art activity. In community-based art education the two-way integration constructs of shared action that produces functional community which then leads to symbolic communality via the process of sharing and the produced art.
